the power of mass media

Mass media has the potential to influence, control and stimulate progress and change in society. The media can make you a hero or a villain; it also determines who they put on the periphery for a life time. The media are the gate keepers of the news. It has the potential to place matters at the center of debate, for instance when it comes to controversial issues, the media can get everyone to talk and debate about that particular issue.  Mass media makes it easier for individuals to get information, news etc.  For instance when Nigeria won the nations cup everyone in the world knew about it and could watch it instantly. it is also our focal point for our free time, for instance a lot of people watch TV or videos when they are relaxing or when they have free time which makes media a leisure-time activity and entertainment in south Africa.(Chobokoane and Budlender,2002:04) . The media is a place where the changing of cultures and values of society are being displayed, constructed and communicated.

where do we draw the line

Better start handling your social media account or forget about the promotion.
People on social networks with their cell phones.

Social media has revolutionized the way customers interact with business by opening up a door to a form of two-way communication. Social media might seem like just a bit of fun, but more and more often we are seeing the things said on twitter and Facebook having a serious effect on real life. There’s a 21 year old biology student who took to twitter the story about Fabrice Mauamba who collapsed on the pitch in March. To express his amusement at the footballer’s heart attack, he was subsequently arrested when others reported him to the police and later charged with inciting racial hatred. His career prospects are in tatters. So be very careful of what you say social media can make or break you.
If you think photos of you and your friends are not a big deal! You better think again. They could cost you your future job. “Significant percentage of job seekers is passed over because of inappropriate Facebook twitter or other social media “says Dennis MCcafferty. Be careful of what you post and what others post about you, because social media is a dominant form of communication you can learn more a person by viewing their public persona.
