Mass media
has the potential to influence, control and stimulate progress and change in
society. The media can make you a hero or a villain; it also determines who they
put on the periphery for a life time. The media are the gate keepers of the
news. It has the potential to place matters at the center of debate, for
instance when it comes to controversial issues, the media can get everyone to
talk and debate about that particular issue. Mass media makes it easier for individuals to
get information, news etc. For instance
when Nigeria won the nations cup everyone in the world knew about it and could
watch it instantly. it is also our focal point for our free time, for instance
a lot of people watch TV or videos when they are relaxing or when they have
free time which makes media a leisure-time activity and entertainment in south Africa.(Chobokoane
and Budlender,2002:04) . The media is a place where the changing of cultures
and values of society are being displayed, constructed and communicated.
